A Bear Goes Fishing

Our first meeting will be Saturday (Sept 23) at 4:15 PM at the Evans house (4960 Firelight Lane, Johns Creek, GA 30022). Go through the wood walkway on the left side of the garage around to the backyard.
We will do the “A Bear goes Fishing” elective https://www.boyscouttrail.com/cub-scouts/bear_adventures.php#fishing We will try to be done by 6 PM or so.

If you have fishing rods, please bring them. I’ll be asking scouts to “make their own” bamboo rod, but who knows if they will work and I don’t want to try to figure out how to get all of us to fish with 5 rods. Otherwise, some kids will be fishing with my daughters Disney Princess fishing rod, and we will have to limit turns fishing to 15 minutes or so. If your scout doesn’t want to wait or use a princess fishing rod, please bring a rod.

Here’s what I need from parents:
1) you need to make sure you kids follow the rules, are safe, and do not prevent other scouts from enjoying participating in the activity. Since we will be fishing, this includes making sure they don’t goof off with the rod with a hook on the line – I’m going to explain to them will happen if someone gets hooked. I’ve done it, it’s not pleasant (the hook is pushed all the way through so the tip is no longer embedded under skin, cut off the end of the hook, and pull the hook out, think getting your ear pierced through your forearm/ear/finger/eyelid). You also need to ensure that while your scout is fishing they’re being quiet/respectful. Loud noises (i.e. kids yelling near the water) and thrown rocks into the water scare fish away. Do not let your scout be the one that ruins others fishing experiences. We want everyone to have fun fishing. I will ask you to leave if you or your scout cannot respect this.
2) Parents with younger siblings (including Tigers): Siblings are welcome provided you can still follow request #1. If having a sibling prevents you from ensuring good behavior from your Bear scout, I’ll ask you to leave.
3) Parents will need to help their scouts fish if they need it. Some scouts are more skilled than others, and I will be working with scouts that need more help. If you can pickup a piece of corn, you can help your scout put it on a hook and fish. I cannot ensure everyone is safe/educated and also bait 16 hooks at the same time.
4) We might need to shuttle some kids to the cul-de-sac on Baccarat lane. Please be willing to help shuttle and supervise scouts on the other side of the cove.

Thank you very much, and I look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you
Steve
